Happy October! I’ve been working, stressing out, and obsessing with a group of very talented people on a huge halloween project since June. It’s such a relief and joy to finally show people what we’ve been doing. Take a look HERE!!! It’s just the beginning 🙂 Stay tuned… B

If you’re a Sailor Moon fan and didn’t make it to the Moon Crisis Tribute show, there is still time! I love these types of events. People dress up, Artists you like display their work, and this time it all revolved around Sailor Moon. It’s just fun and what other time can you wear a crescent moon on your head and be accepted by a large group of people?
I was excited for a few artists. Glenn Arthur being the first. If you haven’t checked him out yet, NOW is the time. Very whimsical, very romantic art. I wish I could paint like him.
This pic below is one from his Instagram.
Ann Marcellino is another artist I was excited to see in real life. All of her work is very fantastical and I love it!
Last but surely not least, I encountered Zambicandy‘s art for the first time and loved her Moony Uni’s. I bought a print… first one of the night she said. Now all I have to do is get a frame for my beautiful ponies.
It took me a while to notice BUT all the Sailor Scouts are Unicorns while Sailor Moon and Chibi are Pegasus (Pegasi?) with a sweet little gold crescent adorning their foreheads all the while Tuxedo Mask is a noble black steed with his signature red rose held lightly in his teeth. Well played ❤
She had so many pretty pieces! I wanted to buy so much from everybody but couldn’t because poverty ;(
These made me lol. Such lolz. Thank you Dustin Myer. I regret not buying these prints.
Lastly I found my wedding dress by Creature of Habit. Such a site for sore eyes.
The show runs through 8/30/14 so go if you’re a fellow moonhead! That concludes this week’s edition of Brittany Made Me Pretty, be sure to tune in next week for another random collection of things I like to spew words about. Until then,
I do makeup because that’s my outlet. It is what gets ideas out of my head. Creating makes me happy. I sat behind a desk for 5 years and it killed a little bit of my soul knowing I was working for someone else’s dream. My free time was spent exhausted from a busy office work week. That left no time for me or my dream and, sorry if this is selfish, but it made me mad and sad… which was a slippery slope to resentment.
Now, I’ve met people that do makeup because it’s the trendy thing to do. I’ve met people that think makeup is being attractive and working for a big name retail company and having thousands of followers on Instagram. I’m not knocking those people, I’m just saying this makeup thing can be so much more.
The nominations for the Oscar’s this year were incredible! If only I could shadow these artists *fist shake* Seeing the work put into these productions and how it pays off has resonated with me since the award show. Here I go vomiting my thoughts into the internets.
The old age makeup Steve Prouty did for Jackass Presents: Bad Grandpa is flawless. You can read more about it here, but the article mentions there were 11 prosthetics for 1 hand… hello?!? And think about this, all of the makeup had to be durable. He got his YOU KNOW WHAT caught in a soda machine for crying out loud! The thought and production that went into this makeup is pretty amazing. If you’ve ever done old age makeup, I’m sure you know how hard it is to make it convincing enough for a photo let alone real life interaction and functionality. PS: I didn’t know Steve Prouty worked on Buffy… Angeeeeeeeeel ❤
I was frustrated reading the article trying to put myself in their shoes, “We had to take them back and forth from their sickest look to their healthiest look, up to five times in one day,” Mathews said. “They maintained that 40-pound weight loss throughout. So when you see them in the film, and they look like they’re 25 pounds heavier and healthier because of the medication, that’s just makeup.” PSS: I didn’t know Robin Mathews worked on Eclipse and New Moon, I like Vampires ❤ ❤
These people don’t have thousands of IG followers, they obviously don’t always have a huge budget, and they don’t look like they are dolled up headed to the club in every photo they take. Please hear me out, I’m not bashing (trust- I follow all the IG heavy hitters in makeup for inspiration), I’m saying don’t be discouraged. Don’t feel like you have to fit into a mold or a stereotype you see if it’s not you. The world’s big enough for all of us. Big things happen offline too. Follow your daydream.
I found this picture from my first photo shoot. I believe it was 1999 based on Justin’s hair in the poster. I designed the set, styled the model, and played role of the photographer with my Kodak disposable camera (or was it Fuji). I discovered my multitasking abilities at a very young age. I was trying to create a youthful, fun, feminine feel with the romantic florals and various pink tones. The remaining props were strategically placed in a staggered triangular vignette to create movement as the eye follows from one portion of the image to the next. Looking back, I would only change my model’s foot positioning, I don’t like that I can see the bottom of her fluffy pink slipper. We are our harshest critics. Nothing. Has. Changed.
I had the amazing opportunity to do makeup for a Rock The House promo video with my good friend Laura. 2 long days felt like a week! So much hard work, and coffee went into hair and makeup alone… and we weren’t even the dancers! Each artist was so unique and talented. I had such an amazing time. It kind of felt like summer camp saying good bye the last night. I’ll never forget watching this group of creative people turn an idea into something real. The best of success to all our new friends!
I haven’t posted in a couple weeks!!! Now I’m situated back in CA and ready to go, no more messing around. Let’s talk makeup conventions, specifically PHAMExpo!! Great deals on great brands, opportunities to meet and chat with fellow artists, new products to test out, aaaaand if you’re like me you gawk at all the artists you follow on Instagram. There’s one more day to catch the expo so get down there on Sunday, I’ll be there working at the My Beauty Mark booth 😉
The main reason I wanted to go to this expo was because I wanted to hear what Doe Deere had to say about her start with Lime Crime. Everything about the brand makes you pay attention to it and I honestly get so excited to see what they come up with next. A couple things I was really happy to hear:
1. She tried a corporate job, a clothing line, and a band before she successfully started Lime Crime at the age of 27. There is still hope for me yet. She put everything she had into her makeup with no holding back. She made things happen with no formula as to how, or any steps to make something work. She imposed her will and I dig it.
2. Not that I have haters… But Doe touched on people and their negative BS in response to her putting herself, her handwork, and her art out there for the world to see. She put it this way, Having Anger Towards Everyone Reaching Success. A lot of times I see people my age (or even worse, younger) doing really cool stuff, starting their own clothing lines, designing cool graphics, starting successful blogs, artists doing big things and making a living doing it. I immediately get so angry that I haven’t done anything great and realize I’m hating on myself! I have so many things I want to accomplish, create, and achieve that I forget about how things take time! Once in a while I need to take a breath, use that hate fire to fuel my ambition, and keep moving forward.
Enough of the emo rant. I went shopping and got some cool stuff.
I have to mention Z Palette!! I don’t know why I waited so long to try these, I love them. I hate carrying a bunch of stuff around. With these I’m able to carry 2 palettes (1 shadow and 1 blush) and be good to go! The lid is clear, it can open and lay completely flat, and the magnets are strong. Worth the investment!
Babette from Lime Crime! Cute peachy lipstick comes out July 15… get it. There they go with that freakishly cute marketing again.
Sooo my mind was blown. That’s a cat shaped palette ring. It’s fashionable and functional. Paw Palette had hearts, diamond, lips, lipstick, and gun rings too! OH!! They also come magnetic so you can put shadow palettes or hair pins on your ring or wrist cuff! Definitely work checking out!
I normally stock up on Nigel’s lashes at these shows since they are discounted so much. These were 15 for $20. Basically that’s 20 dollars divided by 15 lashes and that equals CHEAP!!!
I hardly ever buy anything for my personal use, it’s typically for my kit, but I saw this case online a while back and had to have it once I saw it in person. It’s all about cute Tupperware.
I grabbed a little Monda set bag from Naimie’s. After working on a short film (can’t wait to talk about that experience) I realized I needed one. Has a few spots to hold brushes and a few pockets to hold the necessities. I feel much better now.
Lastly, a few brushes! I really like the couple brushes I have from Royal Brush currently so I grabbed a few different kinds. With that last bit of info, I am off to bed and back to the Expo tomorrow… Don’t quit your daydream. -Doe Deere
I have a folder on my desktop named Inspiration. Any image on the internets I come across that I find remotely inspiring go here. I have lots of ideas for makeup looks and shoots and they are all stemming from these images. Sometimes I get so caught up in my current work that I lose the fun… Well it’s back! Currently looking for models and trying to hash out the details to make these things in my head come to life! Just wanted to share some things I find amusing and give anyone interested a glimpse at the inside of my head. It’s Spring! Get warmer already so I can go outside and play with Inspiration!
